The history of Arduino

Arduino started in Ivrea, Italy in 2005 as a project of Massimo Banzi, David Cuartielles, Tom Igoe, Gianluca Martino, and David Mellis of the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (IDII) with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) within the Futuro in Ricerca (FiR) national program. The name "Arduino" comes from a bar in Ivrea, Italy, where some of the founders used to meet. The bar was named after Arduin of Ivrea, the main medieval Italian king of the Lombard League who defended the city during the Barbarian invasions.
