Types of solar powered steam turbines:

The heat from the sun is then used to ignite the fuel and produce steam, which drives the turbine.

  • An indirect solar powered steam turbine uses the sun's rays to heat a working fluid. The working fluid is then used to produce mechanical power. In a direct steam turbine, the working fluid is directly used to produce mechanical power. In an indirect steam turbine, the working fluid is used to produce heat. The heated working fluid then can be used to produce mechanical power.

Advantages of solar powered steam turbines

The advantages of solar powered steam turbines over other types of steam turbines are the following:

  • The solar panels used to generate electricity can be mounted on roofs or other elevated areas, allowing them to collect more sunlight than traditional turbine designs.

  • They are always air cooled, which makes them very quiet.

  • They have a low Noise, Low Vibration, High Speed (NVH) design, which makes them the fastest type of steam turbine.

  • They have a high specific energy, which makes them ideal for high-speed applications.


Disadvantages of solar powered steam turbines

  • They require sunlight to work

  • They are not always effective in windy conditions

  • They can experience difficulties in cold weather
